We’ve always been big on local shopping, which is the reason we launched our High Street initiative this year aimed at enabling smaller retailers to increase their online presence and encourage more customers to support their local businesses.
With this in mind, we visited Royal Wootton Bassett, a small market town in Wiltshire, in the summer to tell them about our Google business tours – and we were really pleased to get such a great response. The town has a good number of independents, plenty of which could quickly appreciate the value that a tour would bring to them.
As a result, we spent a day photographing 15 businesses around the town centre, all of which are now live. Take a peek at some of them which include exquisite gift shop Primrose Hill, and two floors of the beautiful vintage and shabby chic furniture at In the Pink. We also enjoyed visiting some really traditional retailers that you don’t see in every town, like Maddisons greengrocers and old-fashioned sweet shop, Sugar Rush.
And it wasn’t just the more conventional retailers who were keen to take up the opportunity. The town’s independent travel agent, Cannon Travel, quickly signed up, as did - somewhat more unusually for a business tour customer - funeral directors, Johnson & Daltrey.
Diddie Morton-Holmes, from traditional sweet shop, Sugar Rush, spoke for all of us and reaffirmed the objective of our High Street project when she said, “Our hope is that many people will enjoy looking around Royal Wootton Bassett shops online and will then want to come and visit us in person as a result.”
