Trinkets, Treasures & Royal Town Life
Nestled near the top of a long row of individual shops which make up Royal Wootton Bassett’s bustling High Street, Dandelion gifts has been trading independently for more than 27 years.
Starting life in Swindon’s Old Town area, Dandelion moved to Royal Wootton Bassett in 2007 after coming to the end of the Swindon lease.
Said co-proprietor of Dandelion, Hazel Newson, “The busy High Street and friendly people made Wootton Bassett the ideal choice for the shop’s new home. Having lived and worked here some years ago, I feel I have finally come full circle.”
Hazel and her partner Ken are now the proud owners of the building too, after completing the process of buying the shop last year.
Dandelion sells gifts, luxury greetings cards, scented candles and oils, children’s toys and books, jewellery, trinkets, local souvenirs, and loads more. Browsers can mooch around at leisure or the friendly staff will happily help you select something special. It’s a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which you’ll instantly feel at ease.
We love the old wooden floors, the relaxing background music, the fragrance of fruit-scented candles, and the traditional ‘ding’ of the bells hanging on the door which greets shoppers as they arrive.
It’s great to see that every available bit of space is being used to show off a fabulous assortment of gorgeous gifts, knick-knacks, and treasures. The numerous shelves and display cabinets are brimming over with an array of different gifts to choose.
Part of the business community
An active member of the local community, Hazel heads up Royal Wootton Bassett Business Association, an informal group of around 60 businesses working together to promote the town. There’s always someone from another shop, the town council, or other local organisations popping in to Dandelion to chat about news and ideas.
Some of the projects the Association has worked on include the introduction of High Street gift vouchers and organising shop window competitions for children.
Dandelion was one of the many businesses which used to close their doors to pay respect at the roadside when the bodies of servicemen and women were brought through the town in recent years after being repatriated at nearby RAF Lyneham.
“It was very sad to see so many repatriations,” said Hazel, “but Royal Wootton Bassett has never been gloomy. There’s lots of character here, along with a very welcoming atmosphere and a strong community spirit.”
Dandelion now sells the official memorabilia which was produced displaying the new Royal Crest when the town was bestowed with the ‘Royal’ title in October 2011.
