A Classic Collection
Founded in 1970 to sell modern cars and commercial vehicles in Bedfordshire, family-run business Mathewson's has remodelled and relocated itself over the years.
Now operating from the picturesque village of Thornton Le-dale in North Yorkshire, Mathewson's has become a magnet of a destination for those with a love of vintage vehicles, with its extensive and captivating collection of classic cars, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and automobilia.
From New to Vintage
Back in the days when Mathewson's was dealing with sales of modern cars, owner Derek Mathewson's love of classics was clear from his increasing private collection of vintage vehicles. This gradually took over the business over the years, becoming the sole focus of the operation today.
Now an established classic and vintage car museum, recent building work has enabled Mathewson's to expand their collection. Visitors to the museum can enjoy looking over up to 150 cars, bikes and commercial transport, along with antique memorabilia, with the opportunity to buy some of the exhibits at auction.
Rally Drivers to Prime Ministers
Start the virtual tour on the steps up to Mathewson's, entering the door next to the vintage signs, and you're straight into the museum. Along with some classic motorbikes, this room is crammed with car parts, badges, mascots, tools, model toys, pictures and other antique automotive treasures.
The doorway opposite leads into the first showroom where an impressive array of vehicles which have been carefully restored, cleaned and polished to their perfect bygone glory, can be seen. Exhibits include Rolls Royce and Aston Martins - with values sometimes reaching over £250,000 - along with MGBs, Fords, Minis, Mercedes and BMWs.
In the past, the collection has included vehicles previously owned by Donald Campbell, Sir Alec Douglas-Home and rally driver Russell Brookes, with the 1919 Paris Sigma used to transport Tony Blair around his constituency currently on sale.
The wide ranging and constantly changing collection extends not only into the additional newly built showroom at the back, but a doorway to the side, next to the old Shell petrol pump, draws you through to yet more exhibits. Another fascinating display of nostalgic memorabilia awaits, then a spacious showroom beyond where a further line-up of classics can be admired.
And if that's not enough to keep motoring enthusiasts occupied for a while, two additional buildings are also in the planning, creating space to display even more automotive gems in the near future.
