A Runaway Winner of a Wedding Location
If you're thinking about memorable marriage locations, Gretna Green has to be one of the most famous places in the world.
This Scottish village, legendary as a destination where runaway couples used to be able to tie the knot, currently hosts around 5,000 weddings each year.
With arched brickwork and windows, huge curved ceiling spaces and elegant decoration, Anvil Hall is a magnificent wedding destination in Gretna Green. Built in 1917 in Italian Renaissance style, the building has been carefully redecorated and new furnishings added after being purchased from the Catholic Church in 2003.
With its first wedding taking place a year later, today Anvil Hall carries out around 550 ceremonies every year.
Holding many different civil and religious weddings, Anvil Hall has both the space and intimate atmosphere to suit guest numbers ranging from two to two hundred. Every ceremony takes place by candlelight, adding soft illumination to the stunning brickwork surroundings and even more romance to the occasion.
Get a feel for the quiet beauty of this building in their virtual tour below. Take your own walk along the 50 foot aisle from the entrance to the altar. Halfway up the steps you'll find the traditional blacksmith's anvil and hammer, a reminder of the 'blacksmith priests' who were famous for marrying eloping couples in Gretna history.
It's one of the locations which feature in a new TV series starting soon, following couples who are getting married in this celebrated village. Called Wedding Town, the series begins on Channel 4 in the near future.
If you can't wait that long however, there's an opportunity to look in on one of the many weddings taking place at Anvil Hall this weekend by tuning in to their 'wedcam
'. Each wedding is live streamed over the internet to enable guests who can't attend to watch from wherever they may be in the world.
With ceremonies taking place most days, everyone's invited to watch online.
We're off to find a hat. After all, it's not every day we get to be a virtual guest at a Gretna Green wedding.
