Bringing The Outside Inside

If you like to eat in the open air whilst enjoying the green surroundings of an English garden, then take the virtual visit to The Garden cafe, bar and grill.

Just a stone's throw away from the river which runs through the centre of the pretty market town of Chippenham in Wiltshire, this diverting little garden plot style restaurant is the ideal location in which to relax outdoors, whatever the weather.

Indoor Lawn

It's easy to spot The Garden tucked amongst a row of otherwise ordinary-looking shops. Its soft green and timber exterior, terracotta floor tiles, tree stump chairs and old lawnmowers spilling over with flowers bring a splash of foliage and natural colour to the street.

Owner John Paine explained where the idea for the new eating and drinking venue came from. "I wanted to create a space where people could enjoy the best bits of being in a garden - without the worry of the weather," he told us. "I have always wanted to open a restaurant and when thinking of a theme... The Garden was made!"

Inside, you're welcomed by an expanse of warm wooden floors and furnishings, lit by the glow from the lights in the bamboo and ivy-strewn ceiling above. Although indoors, the overall impression is one of daylight thanks to the big windows and large wall mirrors (check out the novel wooden block frame on the big mirror on the right).

The green-fingered touches continue as you reach the bar, with its astro turf sides and slices-of-tree-trunk bar stools, topped off with hessian cushions to ensure a softer seat. Sit and watch your food being prepared in the open kitchen behind or take a wander through the wooden trellis doorway opposite to take a look at the outside space.

Drizzle Free

Running the length of the building is a pretty courtyard garden, continuing the quirky garden theme in a thoughtfully decorated open air corridor. Strings of bunting, a metal archway, watering cans, step ladders and a big iron gate give it a real English terrace feel.

Overhead roofing lets the natural light through while covering much of the area, so you needn't be bothered by a spot of British drizzle. The addition of wall-mounted heaters can give the temperature an extra boost too, if needed.

Indian Summer

John has collected much of the decorations himself over the years. The mirror, wall lamps and tree trunk stools were all hand made by him in his garage. "It's quite nice to showcase a bit of a hobby," John told us, "while inviting the good people of Chippenham through our doors."

Forget the promised Indian summer; it's clearly not going to happen. With winter just another flip of the calendar page away, we'll be getting our al fresco fix by paying a visit to The Garden very soon.
