Brixham Steam Packet Co.

A treasure trove of maritime memorabilia

A cornucopia of marine collectibles is the sight that meets you when you enter the Brixham Steam Packet Co. in South Devon. To anyone with an interest in nautical antiques and reproductions, this is a gem of a shop packed full of all kinds of maritime marvels from days gone by.

Serving on the QE2

A brand new venture which opened in February this year, The Brixham Steam Packet Co is owned and run by Bob Higginson.  With a passion for the days of transatlantic liners, Bob has a marine history which includes working aboard oil tankers in the English Channel and North Sea, and sailing around the Caribbean while serving on the QE2.

Having been involved in a holiday letting business in the Brixham area for some years, Bob and his wife recently relocated from their home in the Midlands when an opportunity arose to open the shop. The holiday company, Blue Goose Marine, is soon to have a base at the back of the shop, with the front of the building continuing to showcase the eclectic range of antiques and collectibles.

Pirates Ahoy

Visitors are welcome to explore the array of goods on display, including shipping trunks, handcrafted models of boats, ship name plates and bells, anchors, lifebuoys, compasses, binnacles, nautically-themed cocktail shakers, and loads more.

As well as sourcing supplies from across the world, Bob is already selling overseas, with many customers finding the Brixham Steam Packet Co from its popular Facebook page.  He is soon to launch a new website too, adding an online selling service to maritime enthusiasts around the globe.

The aim is that the internet will be the biggest side of the business," said Bob, "with our virtual tour allowing customers from all over the world to see what sort of things we have on sale here."

New recruit, Sammy, will be looking after online sales, with Bob continuing as captain of the shop. He is ably assisted by his Chesapeake Bay retriever, Chester, who you can see in the photo on the left getting into the spirit of things with a Captain's hat.

And they'll all be dressing up again soon as Bob tells us they will be taking an active part in the Brixham Pirate Festival which takes place over the May Bank Holiday. Sounds like the perfect event for a shop with such impressive seafaring credentials.
