Getting Creative in a High-Rise Community
Artists, designers, crafters, programmers, hobbyists and anyone else with a passion for creativity is welcome at Create Space London. Whether amateur or professional, if you're someone who loves to make and do, this is a fabulous place to work with fellow creatives and develop your passion using the abundance of space and tools available.
An independent, not-for-profit organisation, Create Space London provides affordable access for all to workspace, equipment and education.
Located on the 11th floor of a towering building in Wembley (don't worry, there's a lift!), Create Space London gives 24-hour access, seven days a week, to 8,000 square feet of workshop facilities, including screen printing, ceramics, photographic developing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and electronics, to name just a few.
The outside of the building gives little hint of the inventiveness contained within. Once inside, along with the fabulous panoramic view, the generous space contains a collection of studios and workshops, as well as a place to relax and meet with others.
To become part of this artistic community, members pay a surprisingly-affordable monthly fee which goes towards rental of a studio, shared room or desk space. Everyone is welcome to join and, by doing their bit to share the costs, take advantage of the extensive equipment and facilities which would otherwise likely be prohibitively expensive.
In addition to working on individual projects, there are also group workshops and classes designed to give a better understanding of techniques and technologies; a fabulous opportunity to learn with others and enhance creativity in subjects like ceramics, screen printing, electronics and physical computing. Courses are available to everyone, not just members, with a public open evening every Tuesday for those interested in finding out more.
Established since the end of 2011, Create Space London is run by a small board of trustees, a team of four employed staff, with around 200 members who regularly help out on a voluntary basis, including the running of workshops.
A fabulous example of a community bringing their skills together to provide a stimulating space in which to develop, learn, share ideas and create something inspirational.
