Great Local Food in a Striking New Restaurant
An impressive building made of wood and stone, sitting right next to the river in Oundle Wharf, is where you'll find this week's favourite virtual tour of fashionable new restaurant and bar, Tap & Kitchen.
Step inside and you're greeted by an imaginative interior comprising a striking mix of styles. Eye-catching industrial pipework and lighting, stripped wooden walls, high tables and chairs and a sleek, shiny bar greet you as you enter. In addition, the two spacious dining areas with comfy seating, carpets, draped windows and a bold red-flocked wallpaper at the far end, invite customers to stop a while and have something to eat.
Steampunk Sunday
Those of you familiar with steampunk - the subgenre of science fiction and fantasy technology and designs inspired by 19th century industrial steam powered machinery - may well feel at home here. With the creative combination of different decor - old and new, mechanical and romantic - it's not surprising that Tap & Kitchen's recent Steampunk Sunday Lunch event proved popular, with visitors arriving in full Victorian-style costume.
Food Swap
There's a real emphasis here on local food, with Tap & Kitchen aiming to use ingredients from suppliers in the area wherever possible. Local businesses and individuals are invited to make use of the 'swaps board' where they can bring in produce to exchange for credit behind the bar or in the restaurant.
Much of the food is made on the premises too, like the pasta, puddings, chutneys and sauces, and even home-made bacon, sausages and cured meat. "Unpretentious, honest dishes," as their website states, with a great menu that changes every day.
You can even see your food being cooked by the chefs in the kitchen; reassuring customers of the quality cooking standards and adding interest to the dining out experience.
By the Water
If you enjoy a good pint, there's a fine selection of their own beers too, brewed just next door in the Nene Valley Brewery.
With the weather warming up at last, there's loads of seating by the water outside, and they've just introduced a new waterside grill and oven too, for a true al fresco experience.
You can find Tap & Kitchen at Oundle Wharf, Station Road, Oundle, Northamptonshire PE8 4DE, Tel: 01832 238558. They're on the web at
