The Magical World of Puppet Theatre

Biggar TheatreThis week's favourite virtual tour has all the atmosphere of the theatre combined with large-scale puppets and a kaleidoscope of fluorescent colour.

Purves Puppets have been entertaining children and adults alike with their magical performances in the Biggar Puppet Theatre for more than 40 years.

Imaginative Space

Putting on shows throughout the UK and across the world in places like France, Italy, Poland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Jordan, Syria and Singapore, the roots of the Biggar Puppet Theatre are firmly planted in Scotland.

For the past 30 years, the theatre has been based in a Victorian coach house set in the gardens of a country house amongst the rolling backdrop of the beautiful Lanarkshire hills.

Thanks to the inspiration and hard work of the Purves family who run this creative business, and with a little help from artists at Edinburgh University, the interior has been transformed into a wonderfully imaginative space.

Biggar Theatre Cafe

Immersed in Atmosphere

Step inside the conservatory which holds the box office and cafe and you're immersed immediately into the theatre experience. Fabric drapes and candle chandeliers decorate the ceiling, with ornate wooden 'puppet theatre' pillars, wall murals, and red and gold theatre-style seating throughout. Masses of brightly coloured puppet figures dangle cheerfully in rows overhead and peer from the glass cabinets in the shop area, eagerly waiting their chance to be brought to life.

Here, visitors can enjoy refreshments in a large airy space looking out over beautiful country garden views while soaking up the theatrical atmosphere as the excitement of the approaching performance builds.

Glow in the Dark

A sky blue tunnel, with clouds and stars painted overhead, leads to the theatre itself. The magic continues inside this majestic space with its huge mythical wall mural, animal and fabled-figure embossed ceiling, gold walls, and Punch and Judy pillars. The church pew-style, tiered seating can host up to 100 people.

An incredible kaleidoscope of colour, you can also get a feel for the glow-in-the-dark fun of the show itself in the virtual tour with the puppet and background illuminated on the stage. Productions are performed in what is called 'Black Light', where both puppets and scenery glow like magic while the puppet operators become almost invisible amongst the fluorescent display.

Guaranteed to enthral both children and grown ups, this is one theatre trip not to be missed.
