Brewing the Perfect Pint in a Victorian Railway Shed
Brewing quality real ale in a building which was originally a Victorian railway shed but which is now an award-winning, environmentally friendly and contemporary renovation is the subject of our favourite virtual tour this week.
Retaining the feel of its original railway housing function, Ludlow Brewing Co has been stylishly made-over into a modern and eye-catching, light and airy mix of stone flooring, exposed brick walls, industrial-type metal frames, warmly decorated plasterwork and high timber-framed ceiling.
Keeping it Green
Great care was taken during the design of Ludlow Brewery to ensure the building would not only look good, but also be environmentally friendly. Both new and ancient materials were used in the renovation which was completed in 2010, with low carbon insulation and low energy lighting being installed at the fitting stage. They continue with their eco-friendly credentials today by reclaiming heat during the brewing process which is then used to power the under-floor heating. Rainwater is also recycled and solar panels convert light into electrical power.
Recognition for their effective eco-planning was received when Ludlow Brewery received the Ludlow Heritage Award in 2011 after it was judged to be 'exemplary in terms of preserving and enhancing the character through the use of both modern and ancient building materials'.
Drinking up the History
Set in the heart of the beautiful town of Ludlow, just 50 metres from Ludlow railway station, it's not just the brewing of beer which happens here. Ludlow Brewing Co is also a visitor centre and spacious, comfortable bar, with its welcoming leather sofas and warmth from the wood burning stove. Memorabilia from times gone by can be seen dotted around, including information and rail posters, a wooden cart, bicycle, ale bottles and beer barrels.
Take the metal steps to the upper level and mind your head on the low-lying timber beams as you enjoy a drink on the open platform with its great views over the bar and brewing area. At Ludlow Brewing Co you can see the beer making process in action, taste a few drops in-house or buy a couple of bottles of the full-flavoured blend to take home with you.
Having already hosted fashion shows, wedding receptions, concerts, art shows, and parties, this is not just a memorable place to stop for a drink or two, but also a fabulous location to hire for a special event.
If you appreciate quality surroundings where past heritage has been carefully combined with up-to-date comfort, and if you enjoy a 'proper' pint, this should definitely be on your map of places to visit.
