Turning Timber into the Finest Hand-Crafted Furniture

Wonderful hand-crafted kitchens and furniture are designed and built at our favourite virtual tour this week.

You'll find Auspicious Furniture in the pretty Cotswold town of Nailsworth - a place where creativity and craftsmanship come together to produce beautiful, bespoke furniture.

Master Craftsmen

Master craftsman Nigel Wilson and furniture maker Tom Shield make up the business. The duo work closely with their clients from idea inception stage, through to design and the skilled hand-making process which produces the very finest pieces.

In their tour you can enjoy not just the superb showroom, but also get to see behind the scenes where their amazing creations evolve.

Showroom to Workshop

A glorious stretch of warm woods, textured tiles, sleek kitchen units and colourful stained glass pictures make up the customer showroom. There are items of furniture to be admired too, like the stunning walnut rocking chair made for Cheltenham's Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design in 2015, taking around 200 hours to complete.

Meander along to the back of the room where you'll find three glass mermaid topped oak doors. Having more than just a decorative function, one of the doors leads through to the workshop space beyond. Here you can see the numerous different hand tools used in the crafting process around the walls and shelves, as well as the occasional more modern piece of equipment.

On the centre workbench a chair can be seen in the carving process while, behind, a set of impressive oak wardrobes are being made. You can also see that one of the shelves holds a carved wooden van, made by Nigel for his son when he was 7, some 24 years ago.

Timber Transformed

Working largely in elm and oak, Nigel and Tom hand-pick their timber for individual textures and colours. Old, unused pieces like huge oak beams are transformed into something quite special.

This is a tour where you can really get a feel for the process involved in the crafting of custom-made furniture. A place where ideas are formed, timber is fashioned, and the finest quality pieces created from the hands of experienced craftsmen.
