Where Tradition and Contemporary go Hand in Glove

Woodburner Workshop Ltd.'s showroom is a delight. If you have not already visited you will see from their virtual tour that it is a marriage of 17th Restored 17th Century Coaching Inncentury charm and 21st century innovation. Based in the south Leicestershire market town of Lutterworth, this former coaching inn was restored by Sullivan Building, sister company to Woodburner Workshop, who added a large 'green oak' extension to the rear of their Market St. premises.

This light-filled, timber vaulted, space houses their collection of traditional and cutting edge woodburners, luxurious gas fires and home accessories. They always have their favourite Clearview Stoves and Dru gas fires lit, so be prepared to remove your clothing; this is one cool space!

Eclectic Styles

Many of the UK's leading brands are on display; among them Clearview, Morso and Aarrow stoves and the most incredible gas fires from Dutch makers, Dru and Bellfires.

But what's a fire without a fireplace? Apart from their own in-house creations, they have a number of exceptionally beautiful stone fireplaces hand-crafted by J. Rotherham in Bath stone, Portland and native limestones; classic period copies and Modernist designs are on show. Showroom manager, Polly Baines, explained how Woodburner Workshop's eclectic range of styles captures the interest of diverse customers. ''We have appliances and fireplaces which appeal to lovers of country cottages and owners of Bauhaus town houses, if you have a style or design in mind, we can have it made for you.''

Focal Point

Polly went on to explain the growing popularity of having a fire as the focal centre of a home. ''It is not simply about providing heat,'' she said, ''we find that customers are rediscovering the spirit of fire and its primal attraction. A home with a fire is a home alive. I've even had customers tell me that the TV is boring by comparison.''

But many houses these days do not have chimneys! Polly smiles. ''At Woodburner Workshop we can build you a chimney or we can install a flue, both internally or externally; we probably fit two a week like this.''

Every inch of this lovely showroom is tended by Polly's stylish hand. There are examples of wall-art and exquisite artefacts everywhere. Fabrics and rugs adorn the furniture and floors; delicate ornaments abound, as do wicker baskets and companion sets. Said Polly,''We source our home accessories and stoves from all over England, Wales and Scotland, not to mention Europe.

" Wherever there's a flame there's a heart.''
